SAL Sgt at Arms - Joe (Jay) Marzilli - it is with regret that I announce the passing of Joseph

  (Jay) Marzilli, Sergeant at Arms for Sons of The American Legion.  
He went to his final resting ground on the morning of Wednesday, March 5, 2015.  
There will be no wake, only a Memorial Service held on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 10:30AM at Holy Ghost Church (518 Washington Street, Whitman).  An Honor Guard assembled at the church consisting of members from the Son's of The American Legion, Legion Riders, American Legion, and State Officers.  Please, remember him in your prayers.  Rest in Peace.

MEAT RAFFLE On Friday, April 17, 2015 at 7:00PM, The Son's of The American Legion is planning a Meat Raffle with various trays of meat, money raffles, Special Side Raffles of donated merchandise, and a Silent Auction of Sports Memorabilia items.  Open to the Public with Free Admission, and Handicap Accessibility, so come join us.  This event is to benefit Boston Childrens Hospital Detachment of Massachusetts, "Partnership for Kids" program.  The Sons ask all those planning to assist to be available and at the Legion by 6:00PM.  

MEAT RAFFLE On Friday, January 16, 2015 at 7:00PM, The American Legion is planning a Meat Raffle with a Mystery Raffle and a 50/50 Raffle.  There will be five different meat trays available and it will be Open to the Public with Free Admission, and Handicap Accessibility, so come join us.  The Post is asking for help from the Son's and Riders to raise money for a new ice machine for our club.

PEARL HARBOR DAY - this year is on Sunday, December 7, 2014, 73rd anniversary of 1941. 
A request is for the American Legion Honor Guard participation by the Legion Riders.
All participants, especially the Honor Guard are asked to be present at the Legion by 7:30AM. 
A breakfast will follow the ceremony per the President, Ed Kiernan of the Legion Riders.  

MEAT RAFFLE - (#1) On Friday, November 7, 2014 at 7:00PM, The American Legion is planning a Special Meat Raffle so they may raise money and give Christmas gifts to the Troops in Afghanistan. Come support this cause.  There will be five different meat trays available.  Open to the Public and Free Admission.  Come join us.  

Veterans Day - Tri-Town Parade - Tuesday, November 11, 2014 in Rockland - Honor Guard requested in uniform to meet at the Whitman Post by 7:00AM to gather our flags, rifles and pistol. We then will go as a group and assemble in Rockland (Union Street) no later than 8:30AM.  Parade start time and ceremonial events afterwards are unknown.  Honor Guard Uniform will consist of your Yellow ascot & braid, white shirt, dark blue pants, white belt, dark colored shoes, white gloves, dark colored American Legion cap and jacket.

MEAT  RAFFLE  - (#2) The Son's of The American Legion will host a Fundraiser Meat Raffle on Friday, November 21, 2014 at 7:00PM at the American Legion Post 22 in Whitman.  Open to the public with free addmission.  We will have various meat trays and two special raffles for $5/ticket and $20/book (of five tickets).  One raffle is for a juke box ($800 value) and second raffle is one book of $2 massachusetts lottery scratch tickets (300 tickets - $600 value).  See bartender or any SAL officer for tickets.

CASINO TRIP - Mohegan Sun Casino Trip is planned for Saturday, November 1, 2014 from 11AM till 8PM at the cost of $25 per person.  There will be two buses again this year and the cut off date for reserving your seat with full payment is Friday, October 17, 2014.  The trip usually sells out quickly.  Each individual receives a round trip bus fare, a meal voucher, and a betting voucher once paid in full.  For more information contact Ken Lailer at 781-447-2940 or Go to our website at http://www.legion22.org/sons.html and click on the word CASINO.  NEXT TRIP - (March 2015) T.B.A.

HONOR GUARD - Sunday, October 19, 2014 at 4:00PM.  Please, meet at our post at 3:00PM.  Memorial Service in Whitman for Major Michael Donahue - A Memorial Service is planned for Major Michael Donahue, a former Whitman resident and a 1990 Whitman-Hanson Regional High School graduate who was killed in action on September 16, 2014 in Kabul, Afghanistan.  
The committee is hoping to have various Honor Guards present to show their respect, while displaying their colors.  The service will be held in the Whitman Town Park on Sunday, October 19th at 4:00PM.

INSTALLATION of OFFICERS - Sunday, September 21, 2014 at 11:30AM.  Officers, please, be present by 11:00AM in proper attire (SAL cap, SAL tie, SAL name badge, white shirt, dark colored pants, shoes, & belt).  Our State Commander, Bill Murphy will install us.  This will be followed by a Pig Roast at 1:00PM for all in attendance at the cost of $15pp, no exceptions.

Immediately following the Installation of Officers, scheduled for 11:30AM on the same day.
All Officers must be present by 11:00AM along with those assisting.  Please, wear your proper attire (cap, tie, badge, white shirt, dark colored pants, belt, and shoes).

Memorial Day Parade (May 26th, 2014)  -  The Parade in our Town will kick off at 9:30AM.  We ask that all Honor Guard be present and meet at The American Legion Post 22 at 6:30AM.  We have many cemetaries to vist and pay our respects to fallen veterans and heros starting at 7:00AM.  Please, wear your yellow ascot and braid, dark blue cap, white shirt, dark blue pants, white belt, along with white gloves.  Thank-you!  

Nomination & Election of Officers - Son's of The American Legion - will take place on Wednesday, April 30th, 2014 at 7:00PM at Post 22 Whitman.  All paid up members welcome.  

It is with great sorrow that I inform the membership of the Crossing to Post Everlasting of 25 year member Kenneth E Nutt. RIP Brave Warrior.

If you have not paid your dues yet you are now suspended, please send in your dues as soon as possible, we charge less than most posts in this area, so please try to pay your dues.

The Post will be holding a St Patrick's Day Dinner on 15 March 2014, from 6pm to 11pm. Corned Beef and cabbage dinner  will be served, ham will be available. Irish music and we will be having raffles during the night with a fifty-fifty raffle. Irish music will be played. Tickets are $8 each or 2 for $15. See the bartender at the Post for tickets.

 The Post 22 childrens Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, 14 Dec 2013 at 1pm. Children up to the age of ten (10) are cordially invited to attend. Please send back your reply before the 30th of November so we have an accurate count of those that are attending. The children and grandchildren of all members including the Auxiliary, SAL, and the Legion Riders are welcome. ALL PARENTS ARE REQUIRED TO STAY IN THE HALL DURING THE PARTY. Thank you. The SAL plans to hold a Meat raffle on Friday evening at 7:00PM on November 22nd, 2013.  The public is invited.  We will have a Special raffle of a Book of $2.00 Massachusetts Lottery Scratch Tickets (300 tickets in a book with a value of $600).  ON SALE NOW for $5.00 a CHANCE!!!  Plus a 2nd Prize of $100 and a 3rd Prize of $50.  Come join us.  Mark your Calendar..   

The Post entertained over 40 veterans from the Brockton VA Hospital on Saturday, 24 Aug 2013, with a chicken bake at the Post. The buses arrived about 12:30pm and were greeted by Commander Ruichard Cameron, PC John Downey, PC Doug Lloyd, PC Ralph Quimby, PC William Coyle, PC Buddy Akusis, WW Brian Fountain, SAL Commander John Coughlin, Auxiliary members Ronnie Means, Irene Penn, Legion member Bruce Smith.Also helping was Maureen Hanrehan, Roberta Quimby and Clark Fencer.

The Veterans were treated to a dinner of chicken, corn on the cob, salad and desert. They also enjoyed playing horse shoes and throwing a football around the parking lot. They had such a good time that they did not want to leave to go back to the hospital so they asked if they could stay for a while longer and they listened to the music of George Lopes. 

The Commander also passed out shirts that were donated by our good friend Ben Wilcoxen, the Aide to Department Commander Charles Towers.

A heartfelt thank you to all who made this a great day for our hospitalized veterans. Nice job to PC John Downey and all who helped.    Report by PC Paul Tracey, Historian


The Post will holding a Chicken Bake on the 31st of Aug 2013 starting at 1pm. Menu for the day will be a half chicken, potato salad, corn and watermellon. tickets are $8 ea and 2 for $15. Tickets can be purchased at the Legion, see the bar tender.

The Cammander will be looking for a few good men to help with the different committee's this year. If you have some time the Committee Chairperson could use your help. PC Commander and Historian Paul Tracey is Chairing the Veterans Committee, Scholarship Committee and the Student Trooper Committee. If interested in any of these committee's see Paul. 

The new stove is installed and is up and running, but has to be tweaked a bit, it really is a beautiful stove, next time your in the post take a look at it.

It is with great sorrow that I inform the membership of the crossing to Post Everlasting of Past Commander William E Means, HLM/LM on this the 15th of Januiary 2013. Billy will be greatly missed by all who knew him, he never said no when something would go wrong at the Post. RIP Brave Warrior.

William E. “Billy” Means, 70, of Whitman, passed away on Tuesday January 15th at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Veronica (Ware) Means.
Born in Brockton, son of the late Edward Means and Alice (O’Connell) (Means) Fowler.
Billy was a lifelong resident of Whitman, graduate of Whitman-Hanson High School, class of 1962.
He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country for 1962-1966 and was a member of the American Legion Post 22 and the VFW Post 697 in Whitman.
Billy was a retired union carpenter from the Local Union # 424.
He enjoyed fishing and working in his own woodshop and he especially enjoyed being with his grandkids.
In addition to his wife Veronica, he is survived by his 3 daughters, Michelle Means-Drass and her fiancé John Andres of West Bridgewater, Maureen Higgins and her husband Steve of Abington, and Melissa Miller and her husband Brian of East Bridgewater, his brothers, Mark Means and his wife Tracy of Virginia and Steve Fowler and his wife Lynn of Vermont, his sisters, Patricia Reade and her husband Bud of Florida, Donna Mullen and her husband Michael of New Hampshire and Judy Smith and her husband Fred of Vermont; also six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
His services will be held on Monday January 21st at 8:00PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth St. (Rte 58 at the rotary circle) Whitman. His visitation will be held prior to the service from 4:00-8:00PM.Burial will be in the MA V.A. National Cemetery on Tuesday January 22nd at 10:30AM.Family and friends are invited to attend a gathering after his burial on Tuesday at 1:00PM in the American Legion Hall, Legion Parkway, Whitman. Robert J Pratt was back on board the Oriskany as his remains were laid to rest with the Oriskany.

   Congratulations to the Post 22 Color Guard for their 2nd place finish in this years Veterans Day Parade held in Abington. The Color guard did an outstanding job and they have a framed picture at the Post if anyone would like to view it.

 Thank you to All who in some way Donated or Supported our cause on Friday night, April 20th, 2012 at the American Legion "Partnership for Kids" Program, especially the merchants.  After the State convention we received the award for tops in the State now for three consecutive years with our donation.  We achieved the State Commanders Project for the first time this year by raising and donating the most amount of money for Children's Hospital, Boston in 2012.  Remember, none of this is possible without you, the members.  Thank-you, Ken Lailer, Chairman
